Journey to Championship: Q & A with Division U Humourous Speech Champion William Quek
.jpg)
How does you feel about competing in Div U Contest?
Miracle + Luck + Great learning experience. I believe we all can fulfil our goals if we are willing to try.
What do you think helped you the most in preparing for the competition?
Perception is key. I feel life is full of ups and downs but if we can take the heavier part, scrape it off, everything will be light and amusing. So always learn
from life experiences but don’t forget to cheer up!
How did you feel during the competition?
Humanly nervous! Yet it is this energy that keeps me charged up on stage and every speech presentation. So don’t fret over nervousness, turn it into your positive energy.
Winning for the first time at Division level is obviously a milestone for you. What do you look forward to next in your Toastmasters journey?
Learning humbly. If we always think we are the best then we will be obsolete very soon. I hope I can keep a humble heart and learn from people of all ages, races and
groups whom I come across be it in Toastmasters or life.
When did you join LKTM? Looking back and looking at where you are now, in what ways do you feel you have improved?
I joined in 2004 after procrastinating for 1 year which now I terribly regret as I have gained much from knowledge to friends.
I definitely have improved my communications skills because I have averted many disastrous confrontations (with my wife and in-laws!).
We have often heard miscommunication so why not improving communication to avoid it! So I will stay and learn in Leng Kee to reap the good fruits of positive communication.

Congratulations! - Division U Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest'07

Congratulation to William, Thomas and Kan!
We're proud of our 3 members who advanced from the Club Level Contest to the Area Level Contest and onto a most gruelling and challenging Division Level Contest.
First-time participants William and Thomas represented us in the Humourous Speech Contest while contest veteran Kan participated in the Evaluation Contest.
William's speech 'Im-Bossible' looks at the humour of a usually unhumourous situation -difficult bosses. He cracked the audience up with his hilarious descriptions of various stereotypical bosses - The Sacrificing Boss (the martyr of the company, will die for the company and expects employees to do the same), The Teflon Non-Stick Boss (miraculously escapes all forms of decisions and responsibilities) and the Shouting Boss (shouting at his employees all the time). He picked the top prize!!
Thomas's speech 'The Golden Years' envisions a retirement where 70 year old men practice their pick up lines on 60 year olds ("Would you like a manuka honey cocktail? They say it's good for your liver?", said in their best James Bond impression). He was 2nd runner-up.
In the Evaluation Contest, Kan had to evaluate a humourous speech that looked at the the miscommunication between the speaker and his domestic maid. He succintly highlighted the strong points of the speech and gave original and helpful comments to enable the speaker to improve on his delivery in future. He emerged the winner in a tight race.
All in all, a stellar showing at a high level of competition by our Leng Kee Toastmaster members!
